To Wed or Not to Wed?

The other day I was discussing why I don't want a wedding with some coworkers (And no this has nothing to do with my prospects on marriage in the near future). One of them protested that you don't get any gifts if you don't have a wedding. I've purchased enough gifts from registries to know that I want nothing to do with them. What the hell would I do with more dishes, silverware, towels, etc. than I already have? I don't need a new pizza cutter or soup ladle. Some new stuff is nice but really, everything I have is more than adequate. Add a future spouse's stuff and the house is overflowing. So what do you do? Can you ask for money to remodel the bathroom? Probably not. The presents argument just does not work for me.

I say, viva Las Vegas! Skip the wedding, throw a party a few months after the elopement and enjoy the satisfaction of not spending six months arguing with your mother about how to organize your wedding.

(This post is reflective of my feelings towards a hypothetical marriage for E and does not mean I don't wish others well on their own weddings.)
