Dry College Towns
I have nothing against towns that choose not to allow alcohol purchases, but who on earth would decide to go to college in a town like that? And why would they make such a beautiful place without any liquor? This is the same town that has 10 bible book stores but only 2 small "normal" bookstores and one that doesn't open their malls on Sunday. This is one seriously messed up town. Pretty, but messed up.
The Mormons sure picked some nice country to settle in and screw with some of the best parts of life - liquor, shopping and sex. Maybe I should be a bit nicer to the LDS crew, but seriously they have some major issues with non-LDS people and all they want to do is convert others. I have three words for them: Mountain Meadows Massacre. All right, I refuse to make this a rant on LDS missionaries, so I wish you all a nice Memorial Day.
Oh the Twins are on tomorrow. So if you go to the game, you must force the Twins to win because a blow out while listening to the Hawk is more than I can take.
So My Week Was Fantastic...
Living in a tiny cabin for weeks on end with no kitchen and no friends anywhere can get really boring after a while. This week however, I made friends with the environmental cleanup guys living in a few of the other cabins. One of them hates eating out and as he's on the road nine months out of the year, he brings a full kitchen with him. This typically includes two grills, a hot plate, and four totes full of spices and cooking utensils.
So oddly enough, I talked to them (not generally a good idea to talk to drunk strangers, but whatever) and they invited me to dinner. Let's lay out the menu for the week:
Sunday - Brats and beer (C didn't feel like cooking)
Monday - 12 oz steaks on the grill, roasted potatoes, honey glazed green beans, and margaritas made just for E.
Tuesday - Spaghetti and meatballs with an excellent garden salad and beer
Wednesday - Chicken and steak fajitas, other mexican stuff and more margaritas for E
Thursday - Grilled chicken, roasted potatoes, grilled squash and still more margaritas for E.
The food was fantastic and the margaritas were extra strong. Also, it was all free and provided me with entertainment for the whole week. I was so depressed when they left yesterday that I had to leave town too. I don't know what I'll do with myself next week. I think the alcohol greatly improved my impression of the town last week.
Today, I got in my car, filled it with gas for the first time in a month (seriously) and drove to a place with a mall. Then I kept driving and found another place with stores. Utah sucks, but it has a lot of places to shop. I found that I like stores and they like my credit card. I'm also driving down a road that continually tells me I'm going to Las Vegas. I think eventually, I might just end up there some weekend.
And I Bought a House...
So much for the debt free thing. Oh well. The really eerie thing is the house is exactly the same as my old house except it's a single family home, it's bigger and it has a huge yard which will require mowing. I much prefer paying someone to mow my lawn. That said, I'm so sick of living in a cabin I don't care how much work it is or how much it costs, I'm getting my own place.
In other news, I thought it was timely to mention that my Brewer Boyfriend, Hardy, has been kicking ass and taking names. Bert was on the Brewers pre-game yesterday and commented on how excited he was to see Hardy. The team is apparently going to appear on The Young and the Restless next week with Hardy as "the heartthrob". I was glad to see he had a homerun this evening.
I had a work dinner tonight and everyone made fun of me because I had to check the Twins score at dinner. Although Krysta was pretty interested in the whole watching sports on your cell phone thing because the Jazz are playing tomorrow while she's at church. Sales award dinners are really boring and my cell phone was my lifeline away from the inane speeches.
The sales manager's whole spiel was that they needed to have 212 degree service. Whatever. Where's the tequila?
I'm Now Officially Debt Free
That's right all, my house closed today. So instead of massive mortgage debt, E is getting a very large check in the mail. I'm going out to look at some houses tomorrow. We'll see. Housing prices out here are criminally high.
In other news, I really have no other news because I do nothing exciting. I did watch my first Twins game in over a month the other day. Now if only we had been able to turn on the Twins radio broadcast and shut Miller/Morgan up everything would have been grand. That said, the Twins have obviously been pining for me as they have sucked pretty much the entire time since I left. Sunday was an obvious attempt to entice me to come back.
A Post!
So apparently it's been two weeks since last I was in here. Now most people would think that when there is a nasty blizzard outside, I would stay in my very confining cabin but no, here I am not sitting in my cabin. I ran through foot deep snow just to get to my car. But after running to the post office to get a mailbox set up, here I am at the library watching the snow blow all over hell and back. The joys of May in the mountains.
Last weekend, I jumped in my car and drove a out to the Flaming Gorge Dam. I would post a picture but sadly, I don't have my computer here yet and I can't do it at the public library. Anyways, I just wanted to point out that the weather then was well into the 70s and quite nice. Also, you can drive 50 miles and see some really beautiful things. This weekend I was thinking about heading up into the Uintas, but I'm not sure I want to go up there until this snow has melted a bit. If we get 6 inches here, they got a foot or more in the mountains. And the road up there is not maintained.
My job is going well. I got paid this week. The check was much higher than my checks in Minnesota, so that was exciting. No state taxes and not having to pay for medical/dental insurance helps a lot.
My house is now officially empty. All of its contents are currently parked in a semi-trailer in my parents' pasture. I'm sure the mice and squirrels are having a grand old time. I need to find a house quickly.
